PAKISTAN

1998 - Bangladesh
Pakistan played only one match in the 1998 tournament when it was beaten by the West Indies in the quarter-finals. Pakistan was able to post only 259 on the scoreboard in reply to West Indies' 289, despite good performances by Ejaz Ahmed (51) and Saleem Elahi (46). A three-wicket claim by star bowler Wasim Akram was also not sufficient to improve Pakistan's chances in the event.

2000 - Kenya
A brilliant century by opener Saeed Anwar (105 not out) dominated the Pakistani innings as they scored 195 and defeated Sri Lanka by nine wickets. Excellent bowling performances from Wasim Akram (3-40) and Azhar Mahmood (3-52) limited the Sri Lankans to 194 in the first quarter-final.

In the semi-finals, New Zealand prevailed over Pakistan to earn themselves a place in the final. Pakistan were strong favorites to repeat their resounding nine-wicket victory against the side in last year's World Cup semi-final. However, skipper Stephen Fleming's and his team had other plans in mind when they won by four wickets. A brilliant century from Anwar, however, could not save the day for Pakistan as it did in the match against the Sri Lankans.

2002 - Sri Lanka
An unbeaten century by Sanath Jayasuriya thrashed hopes of Pakistan progressing beyond the pool stage. Earlier, Pakistan was limited to 200 runs with only Anwar (52) and Misbah-ul-Haq (47) making notable contributions. Their only consolation came from the nine-wicket win against the Netherlands with half-centuries by Anwar and Imran Nazir. A three-wicket haul by Shahid Afridi saw the opposition attack crumble to 136 runs.

2004 - England

Pakistan, after a thrilling victory over arch-rivals India and crushing Kenya in the pool matches, looked all set for a sure victory over the West Indies in the next semi-final at the Rose Bowl. The real answer, as it turns out, is that in this game there is no such thing as a sure thing. Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq chose to bat first on a pitch renowned for favoring the chasing team and had to pay a heavy price when West Indies beat Pakistan by seven wickets. The low-scoring match saw Pakistan being choked for just 131. A gutsy half-century by vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan took his team home to book their place in the final.

2006 - India
Troubled times continued for Pakistan in the 2006 event when they were eliminated in the group stage. The team lost to South Africa by 124 runs when they were all dismissed at 89.They also lost to New Zealand by 51 runs in the group stage despite half centuries by Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik. Their only victory in the tournament was against Sri Lanka, when they won by four wickets after Imran Farhat posted a half century and Abdul Razzaq capped four wickets.
